What is corrugated

The main categories of corrugated board are:

  • Single face board – one layer of straight paper and one layer of corrugated

  • Single wall board – two layers of straight paper with an intermediate (medium) layer of corrugated paper (3 layers board)

  • Double wall board - three layers of straight paper with two intermediate layers of corrugated paper (5 layers board)

  • Triple wall board - four layers of straight paper with three intermediate layers of corrugated paper (7 layers board)

But how is corrugated cardboard made? The main raw materials for making corrugated board are
(paper) linerboard, which can be either virgin or recycled or a mixture of both, and starch.

The starch glue is the second component and is deposited on the peaks of the corrugated and thus adhered to the two outer straight layers of paper. The source of the starch for the production of starch gue is usually natural with the most common being corn starch.

The combination of different types of corrugated (different corrugation heights) as well as different paper grades offer a huge number of combinations to create packaging with different characteristics and performance.

This ingenious construction forms a series of connected arches, a geometric form that is well known for its ability to support strong weights. This structure gives corrugated board considerable rigidity and resistance. The air circulating in the flutes also serves as an insulator which provides excellent protection of the packed goods against temperature variations.

Corrugated cardboard is made from renewable natural resources.

The life cycle of the paper is closed-loop recycling, through the reuse of basic materials.
